Pinball repair

All,
I have been given a Gottleib "Grand Slam" (EM) machine that has the following problems:

It takes a couple of balls to drain before it comes to life, i.e. bumper don't bumper don't bump, flippers don't work, etc.

When it does start to work, it will register 1000 points every time I use either flipper. Other symptoms include not keeping correct count of the "ball in play".
